50 films considered to be the best ever (50 Photos)

Posted: 04 May 2016 12:30 PM PDT

There's probably no way we'll ever determine the greatest film ever made (or even agree on a top 3). There are just far too many opinions on the subject. A handful of credible institutions will tell you Orson Welles' Citizen Kane is the greatest. Others will tell you Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is, or The Wizard of Oz or Battleship Potemkin should take the cake. Or, if you're me, Kangaroo fucking Jack. The point is, there are far too many established organizations that share valid opinions on what the greatest film ever is, so we'll likely never have a clear-cut answer that you can yell at your friends the next time you drink. But what we CAN do, is lump a boatload of professional opinions (Metacritic, Rotten Tomatoes, Brussels World's Fair Poll, Sight and Sound Poll among a few) together, include audience polls, and see what films fall where. It's not an exact science, but based on what has developed, I'm at least partially convinced the method holds some validity. Here are 50 contenders for some of the the best movies ever made, in no particular order. A lot of films might not be included, so feel free to voice your opinion in the comment section below!
